Falls can be most worrying in the elderly population (65 years and over) due to bone degeneration, osteoporosis and risk of fractures such as

A fall can have an effect on a person’s confidence and self-esteem; this can then lead to other issues such as reduced mobility and fear of leaving the house. There are many risk factors which can cause a fall.

Risk factors of falls

There are many factors which can increase the risk of a fall. Some of them can include:

Environmental factors

  • Carpet type
  • Furniture (overcrowding)


  • Shoes (ill-fitting, heeled, sole condition)
  • Long skirts around ankles
  • Loose fitting trousers (too big)
